We just came back from a day trip to Gibraltar and like always, this wasn’t as easy as we thought. Our little Mojito-Party went on until 6.20 in the morning and we had to get up at 8.00, so I had more or less one and a half hour sleep. Until everybody was ready to go, it was nearly 10, but as we arrived at the bus station, we found out that we had lots of time, the next (and first bus of the day) leaves at 11.30, damn, I could have slept 2 hours more!
One really important thing, if you want to go to Gibraltar, don’t waste time on searching for buses going there, they just drive to La Linea and you have to walk over the border. There is no problem with this, from the bus station it is only a five minute walk, but nobody is telling you this. The bus is quite expensive, you pay 10.75€; for one trip, so Sarah, the Italian girl decided not to go, only 3 people left. Any way, we went, because we wanted to see the monkeys and Afrika.
The trip was quite long, even if they tell you it only takes 2 hours, first we had a big traffic jam and needed 1,5 hours to leave Cadiz (you would be faster by walking!) and the bus takes the route along the coast (through Tarifa, where we are going tomorrow, I think we should have planned better). What we saw ‘til now from Tarifa was amazing, wide beaches, pinetrees next and lots of surfers kite and wind. We even thought about leaving the bus and staying there directly, especially on the way back to Cadiz, when we saw the beautiful sunset over the ocean.
From Tarifa it is just one more hour, so without traffic jam the trip takes about two and a half hours (one way). It is really funny, when you want to enter Gibraltar you have to show your passports. Once you are inside, it’s a different world, like a small English town but with lots of Spanish influence. Most of the people speak both languages, everything is in English (and Pounds) and you can buy all the fancy English food like Catburry’s and Ginger Bread.
First we wanted to see the monkeys so we took a bus that was going up half the way of the “upper rock” and started to walk. You have to pay a small fee to enter, 50p and whatever it is in Euro actually. After the first curves we saw our first monkeys and a whole monkey family with a little monkey. They are just sitting there and running around. A Englishman told us how to get to the cable car but there are a lot of cross roads and we took some wrong roads and after a while we were too tired (the rock is damn steep!). Anyway, we already saw monkey and Africa as well!
So we hitchhiked back down, and we were lucky, the first car stopped. It was a old couple, he Gibraltan, she Spanish. On the drive down we saw another baby monkey with an irokesian hair cut.
Afterwards we did some shopping (Tabaco and alcohol is really cheap) and went back to the bus station. All in all a nice trip, but to short and definetly not good when you start from Cadiz.
Back home in the hostal, we fall into the “Caracol Cross Dressing Party” everybody from the hostal, even Nick, the owner, and all of the staff, were cross-dressed.
You can imagine...
